China Eastern adds flights from Sydney to Hangzhou

The SkyTeam member is adding a fourth link from mainland China to Sydney, but there’s a triangular twist. China Eastern Airlines has added four flights a week to Hangzhou, two direct and two via Auckland, from November 6. The direct connections are the first cab off the rank, and the reverse flights departs at 11:45pm on Tuesday and Saturday, arriving in Sydney at 12:15pm a day later. All flights are on an Airbus A330 which features a fully-flat bed for you to stretch out on that near-11 hour flight. Business class travellers and top-tier Platinum members of China Eastern’s Eastern Miles loyalty program can visit the Qantas Business Lounge at Sydney Airport's international T1 terminal ahead of departure. China Eastern also flies daily from Sydney to Shanghai, a route will resume in late October.

Shanghai-based China Eastern Airlines’ bird livery is already a common sight at Sydney Airport. Soon, it will be even more so, with four flights a week to Hangzhou – two direct and two via Auckland – taking wing from next month.

Those direct connections from Sydney to Hangzhou are the first cab off the rank. From November 6:

• MU712 departs Sydney each Monday and Friday at 3:10pm, touching down in Hangzhou’s Xiaoshan International Airport at 11pm.

• The reverse MU711 departs at 11:45pm on Tuesday and Saturday, arriving in Sydney at 12:15pm a day later.

All flights are on an Airbus A330 which, though sporting a less than ideal 2-2-2 layout in business class, does feature a fully-flat bed for you to stretch out on that near-11 hour flight.

Starting November 7, the triangular link via Auckland is a little more complicated. However, it does unlock the ability to book a trans-Tasman leg between Sydney and Auckland (for those in the mood for a few hours in lie-flat business class comfort).

Those flights follow the below:

• MU731 sees wheels up from Hangzhou every Sunday and Thursday at 3:45pm, with wheels down in Auckland at 9:40am the next day (Monday and Friday, respectively). It then continues to Sydney as MU712 at 11:40am, landing at 1:10pm.

• MU711 from Sydney to Auckland departs each Wednesday and Sunday at 2:15pm, landing in Auckland at 7:30pm, before continuing to Hangzhou as MU732 at 11:45pm. Touchdown in Hangzhou is at 6:45am the next day.

Business class travellers and top-tier Platinum members of China Eastern’s Eastern Miles loyalty program can visit the Qantas Business Lounge at Sydney Airport’s international T1 terminal ahead of departure, as can Qantas Gold and Platinum frequent flyers.

Of course, if these China Eastern flights are booked under a QF flight number as part of the Qantas-China Eastern alliance you’ll also earn a hefty serve of Qantas Points and Status Credits.

China Eastern also flies daily from Sydney to Shanghai – a route will resume in late October – on its Airbus A350, in addition to thrice-weekly flights to Wuhan and Nanjing.
